Summary

Vous avez aimé The Crown ?

4 1/2 stars。 Read the book and listened to the audiobook。 Loved it! 3。7 stars。 Learned some interesting things。 Like that there were short chapters that broke up the story into digestible parts。 Still think this era is written about ad nauseum, but that didn't deter me from enjoying this book。 3。7 stars。 Learned some interesting things。 Like that there were short chapters that broke up the story into digestible parts。 Still think this era is written about ad nauseum, but that didn't deter me from enjoying this book。 。。。more

Closer to three stars than five。Ostensibly about the first year of Winston Churchill's prime minstership, from May 1940 to May 1941, the book is divided by three different stories: London surviving the blitz, the Churchill family navigating personal struggles, and how Nazi leadership tried to conquer Britain。The best section, and the primary focus, is how Winston Churchill had to remain resolute in the face of pummeling bombing while trying to convince Roosevelt (and America itself) to join him。 Closer to three stars than five。Ostensibly about the first year of Winston Churchill's prime minstership, from May 1940 to May 1941, the book is divided by three different stories: London surviving the blitz, the Churchill family navigating personal struggles, and how Nazi leadership tried to conquer Britain。The best section, and the primary focus, is how Winston Churchill had to remain resolute in the face of pummeling bombing while trying to convince Roosevelt (and America itself) to join him。I was less interested in young Mary Churchill's dating life or daughter-in-law Pamela's affairs。 John Colville, a civil servant, becomes a major character I assume because his diary offered good primary evidence。 He didn't seem to do much other than witness。Hess and Goring offer brief interludes about how the Nazis were viewing things。Mid-level Larson。 。。。more

I wish Erik Larson had been writing my history books back in high school。 He has an amazing way of bringing everyone alive and making history an intriguing and fascinating read。 This book was no exception。

While I didn't enjoy this book as much as Devil in the White City, the quality was certainly there。 I'd go so far as to say it's probably better than my ranking。 I think my hesitation is only due to how much WWII material out there。 It can be numbing。 That said, this was still enjoyable and worth a read if you're interested in the subject matter。 While I didn't enjoy this book as much as Devil in the White City, the quality was certainly there。 I'd go so far as to say it's probably better than my ranking。 I think my hesitation is only due to how much WWII material out there。 It can be numbing。 That said, this was still enjoyable and worth a read if you're interested in the subject matter。 。。。more

Took me a little while to get into it, but I was hooked by the end。 Fascinating telling me England during early WWII (pre-US involvement)。 The level of devastation is shocking。 And I loved the juxtaposition of that against the carrying on of life - particularly through Mary Churchill。

What a splendid read。 Highly recommended。 Knowing this book had very good reviews, I somehow had lower expectations due to the short time frame of the subject matter。 I was overwhelmed。 Having read a couple of other books by Larson I knew of his great narrative writing style。 It reads like a novel, though definitely a work of history。 The story is about Churchill's first year as PM with his family and heroic British citizens during the vile Nazi bombings and an anticipated invasion of England。 L What a splendid read。 Highly recommended。 Knowing this book had very good reviews, I somehow had lower expectations due to the short time frame of the subject matter。 I was overwhelmed。 Having read a couple of other books by Larson I knew of his great narrative writing style。 It reads like a novel, though definitely a work of history。 The story is about Churchill's first year as PM with his family and heroic British citizens during the vile Nazi bombings and an anticipated invasion of England。 Larson has brought the many characters surrounding Churchill to life。 You could feel the tensions of his decision making and plea for American assistance。 With all of his idiosyncrasies he was truly the man for the time。 Never thought a book of history could be such a page turner。 。。。more

Inside look at Churchill's first year during WWII。 Always good to learn about such an important time, the mastery of Churchill, and the bravery of the English; however, it was a little repetitive。 Bombing after bombing。 The family insights were not that interesting to me。 Inside look at Churchill's first year during WWII。 Always good to learn about such an important time, the mastery of Churchill, and the bravery of the English; however, it was a little repetitive。 Bombing after bombing。 The family insights were not that interesting to me。 。。。more

An excellent history of a narrow slice of WWII history。 I liked the many diary excerpts from the well-connected and ordinary alike。 Larson tells a suspenseful tale and features Churchill’s daughter Mary and daughter-in-law, plus his personal secretary John Colville, winningly。I happened to start this just as Russia invaded Ukraine and the gravity of the present echoed in the tale of the past。 The parallels between Churchill and Zelensky, Hitler and Putin, the bombing of England and the bombing o An excellent history of a narrow slice of WWII history。 I liked the many diary excerpts from the well-connected and ordinary alike。 Larson tells a suspenseful tale and features Churchill’s daughter Mary and daughter-in-law, plus his personal secretary John Colville, winningly。I happened to start this just as Russia invaded Ukraine and the gravity of the present echoed in the tale of the past。 The parallels between Churchill and Zelensky, Hitler and Putin, the bombing of England and the bombing of Ukraine, the desperation of England and Ukraine in battles they fought/are fighting independently, and the suffering of the British and the Ukrainians are stunning。 I didn’t intend to read this book because of the Russian invasion but it gave the book more resonance。 。。。more

Why did I speed read The Splendid and the Vile? Because Erik Larson his own self was coming by the bookstore to sign a buttload of copies, and it's polite to have read the book when making small talk with an author for an extended time。 Look, I'm not a history buff, and even I can see that Erik Larson is extraordinarily gifted at what he does。 I've read several of his prior books。 I HATE reading about WWII。 (It's the whole murdered family thing。) The fact that I got through the entire book speak Why did I speed read The Splendid and the Vile? There are lots of Churchill books, so I appreciate this one really focusing on his leadership during the blitz。 It also interwove family events and well as the German leaders for a good, well researched narrative history of the blitz。

A book that chronicles almost day by day Churchill reign during ww2。 Too much at a time when we are encountering another war。 Too much detail including what they ate。 Not my cup of tea。

During my reading of this thoroughly researched account of Chuchill's first year as PM, I kept thinking about my mom who was a nurse in Bristol and London during the blitz。 Her accounts match Larson's descriptions of the persevering British citizens。 From the sleep deprivation to the obvious horror of losing loved ones; just a stunning achievement by the British populace。 As for the book; it moves quickly from lighthearted anecdotes to devastating descriptions of the constant fall of bombs in ne During my reading of this thoroughly researched account of Chuchill's first year as PM, I kept thinking about my mom who was a nurse in Bristol and London during the blitz。 Her accounts match Larson's descriptions of the persevering British citizens。 From the sleep deprivation to the obvious horror of losing loved ones; just a stunning achievement by the British populace。 As for the book; it moves quickly from lighthearted anecdotes to devastating descriptions of the constant fall of bombs in neighborhoods。 The jacket says " 。。。 takes the reader out of today's political dysfunction to a time of true leadership。" From preliminary accounts of Putin's aggression and the Ukrainian response, we see the courage of Churchill (and the British citizens!) is present today。 We can only hope that our country could mount such a response。 Lastly- the research Larson does is as remarkable as his other works。 (there's a hundred pages of evidence to that feat in the epilogue) 。。。more

I really think I would have given this 5 stars if I had read the printed book instead of listening to the audio version。 The narrator drive me crazy with his attempts at female voices, they were all breathy and fluttery and stupid and hard to understand。 But the writing, and the way the story was told, was spectacular。

Sometimes closer to 3。5 but this was such a different method of relating WWII history that I feel like it deserves an extra half star。 I went into this book totally blind, although I did read Larson's previous novel。 The personal details of the men and women involved in and affected by (primarily) the war between Germany and England were almost all new to me。 In some ways, it brought the war to a more human scale and in others it made it the game of powerful figures。 Larson handled both deftly。 Sometimes closer to 3。5 but this was such a different method of relating WWII history that I feel like it deserves an extra half star。 I went into this book totally blind, although I did read Larson's previous novel。 The personal details of the men and women involved in and affected by (primarily) the war between Germany and England were almost all new to me。 In some ways, it brought the war to a more human scale and in others it made it the game of powerful figures。 Larson handled both deftly。 How refreshing to hear tales about Churchill that removed the myth and elevated the peculiar man himself, including is penchant for pink silk undergarments, daily naps, and working from bed until the afternoon。 。。。more
